Capacitor discharge stud welding, or CD welding, is a semi-automatic arc welding process performed without ferrules or flux. Lasting only milliseconds, this process can be undertaken on thin sheets of metal without pronounced distortion, burn through, or discoloration.

CD weld studs, or capacitor discharge weld studs, are small diameter fasteners joined to thin sheet metal. A CD stud can be shot to the attachment side without reverse-side marking, unlike traditional fabrication methods that require drilling a hole to insert a bolt for an attachment point.
